What’s going on?

Smarty is a made-up chatbot, but its answers are based on mistakes real chatbots make.

Chatbots write by predicting the next word. They sound smooth and confident, but you can’t be sure they know what’s true. Sometimes they make up books, people and dates that don’t exist: this is called hallucination.

A smart user uses a chatbot like a helper and makes the final decision themselves.
